Formula
VAT = net amount × VAT rate. Gross total = net amount + VAT. Deposit = gross total × deposit percentage.
Worked example
A £5,000 net quote at 20% VAT adds £1,000 VAT. The customer total is £6,000 and a 25% deposit is £1,500.

A safer way to use the result
- 1Confirm the business VAT status and the treatment of the supply.
- 2Show net, VAT and gross totals clearly on the customer document.
- 3State whether line-item prices include or exclude VAT.
- 4Keep VAT settings consistent when a quote becomes an invoice.
Common mistakes
- Adding VAT when the business is not VAT registered.
- Using the standard rate without checking whether the supply has different treatment.
- Calculating a deposit on the net total when the customer must pay VAT on the deposit.
- Showing a VAT number that does not belong to the quoting business.
Questions tradespeople ask
What is the standard UK VAT rate?
The standard rate is currently 20%, but reduced, zero-rated and exempt treatment can apply in specific circumstances. Check current HMRC guidance or a qualified adviser.
Can a non-VAT-registered tradesperson charge VAT?
No. A business that is not VAT registered must not present an added amount as VAT.
Should a quote show the VAT amount separately?
For a VAT-registered business, a clear net amount, VAT amount and gross total help the customer understand the price and support consistent invoicing.
